Leif Warning: I watch video at ludicrous speed, so my binge may not match your binge. Thoughts on Netflix' Jessica Jones: Very well executed, but with several "flaws", many of which I'm not immediately sure how I would have corrected. - It was so dark I watched with a full-spectrum lamp shining in my face. - Daredevil's cast seemed conspicuously overbalanced toward virtuous, white males. This series seemed conspicuously overbalanced away from them. - Tennant is *really good* as Kilgrave, but I wasn't completely impressed with the writers' approach. On the plus-side, Kilgrave was plausibly wrestling with what it means to be handed everything he asks for. On the down-side, given his motivation (dissatisfaction with not being able to control Jessica), trying to increase his power was one logical path, but not nearly the most satisfying. Far more terrifying would have been a Kilgrave who took a year to work with Robert Cialdini and others like him, developing slightly more subtle applications of his abilities. (e.g. giving commands like "I want you to spend as long as it takes, honestly convincing yourself that you need to do this thing, at any cost.") Obviously, this is not the only approach to world domination, but it would have been *thorough*, which makes it more formidable. Instead, - Most of Kilgrave's behavior was so cheap, simplistic and predictable that I had trouble respecting him as an opponent. This, in turn, made it hard for me to respect the protagonists. It took them until the finale until someone put on some damn headphones. - Instead, Kilgrave reminded me of the men who've been in the press of late, so emotionally stunted that their obsession with women-as-deserved-possessions drives them to throw tantrums. - Strengthening the parallel, Kilgrave leaves a lot of collateral damage in his wake. This is somewhat believable, since he has been able to get away with anything, most of his life. But the degree to which he acts like an over-powered stalker does make the entire series start to look like contemporary social commentary. - On a related note, Kilgraves method of threatening and coercing people is so monotonous that the only way to amplify tension is to increase the stakes: more people's lives are at risk. Eventually, this ceases to be frightening, passes through "misery porn", and is simply bathetic. Contrast this with a (hypothetical, subtle) Kilgrave who insinuates himself into the lives of people around Jessica, and gets them to convince themselves that Jessica should have stayed with him, such that they efficiently and consistently undermine her view of the past. Suddenly, the psychological stakes are *much greater*. Instead, we're given stalker-ex on steroids. - This feeds into the biggest weakness of the series. I'm not left with an impression of Jessica as a character, except in the context of her relationships (with Kilgrave, Patricia, Luke, Hogarth). Granted, not all of those relationships are sexual or romantic, which is certainly a step up. Her significant relationships are pretty well-balanced between male and female, which is a huge plus. Nonetheless, the fact that the script relies on the creepy stalker ex as the supervillain, leaves me reluctant to characterize the work as "female friendly"*, except in the sense that Lego's "Friends" line is "female friendly"; both seem to exist within the same set of expectations and roles. I note that the original graphic novels didn't suffer this weakness. Bendis' script made sure to develop Jessica's character and voice extensively, before Kilgrave returned. *"female friendly" is used as a less-politically-charged substitute for "feminist". You may read "feminist" if you can do so wisely.
