Shekerev For the privilege of being turned into conformists, students (or their families) pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in skyrocketing tuition that continues to outpace inflation. Why are we doing this to ourselves? This is from a book I am reading. What do you guys think?

Shekerev I am feeling cheated in my med school and at the same time without taking their exams I cannot do much in the real world. I also think I learn more on my own and by thinking through things alone. Actually if I am to believe the online articles+friends there are bartenders in Bulgaria outearning Physicians as well, so I feel doubly cheated at times :). Study groups - I agree.

Michael Ferguson I could have said this, precisely. Itis not just that costs are outstripping inflation. They have stopped making sense in an absolute sense. I have calculated the cost of a college eduction based upon current costs and it generally works out to $6,000 to 10,000 depending upon how inetense one thinks Professor-Student interaction should be. Since I believe in autodidactism, I am more inclined toward the $6,000 number. But, instead we find that prevailing tuitions at top universities are around $40,000 per year. Why? Because teacher-student ratios are in the 2:1 to 4:1 range, but classes rarely are smaller than 20. Essentially, universities are full of Professors who do little or no teaching.

Michael Ferguson Because I believe in autodidactism, I believe that the primary cost of a University education should be the cost of reviewing papers and undertaking oral defense.

Michael Ferguson I have not yet written the Polymathica Microstate University section of that page on my personal blog. However, I have incorporated it into my economic model. Since it will be the first Polymathica Institute, I assume that it would have a relatively large non-resident applicants. I believe that at the University level learning should be based upon a 'Thesis only' approach. While I believe in autodidactism, I think there is benefit to study groups. The group can, from time to time, retain a Fellow's attendance and interaction. The primary cost will be a direct compensation to a thesis advisor and then, upon completion of the thesis, the cost of convening a thesis review committee, typically comprised of the advisor and two other Senior Fellows. Total direct cost of the education would be about $20,000.

Shekerev I have been reading Tim Ferriss book the 4-hour workweek. In it there is a chapter on selective ignorance where he argues that most of the immediate information is irrelevant for decision-making and we can go without it. He is recommending a low-information diet so to speak. This makes me feel uneasy, but also not without grounds. For example, my newsfeed on facebook is mostly science and medical research with little immediate personal benefit. What I observe is that I learn best when I have a problem at hand and I try to solve it by reading books, blogs, talk to better informed people. etc What do you think? How do you go about acquiring erudition?
